DeFraggler Introduction

Defraggler is an improved defragmenting program for your Windows PC that will speed up your computer, reduce the wear and tear on your hard drive, and make you and Windows more efficient.  I recommend it over the built in defragmenting program in Windows.

Basically, your files get broken into smaller and smaller fragments on your hard drive.  This requires the drive head to have to go to numerous places to get the total file.  Defragmenting basically pulls all those pieces back together, so that an entire file can be read with one "read".  When reading hundreds of files to make a program open and work, this can make your computer a slight bit faster, especially if it is seriously defragmented.

I normally defragment my computer once a year or so.

DeFraggler - How to Use

To start DeFraggler, click on the Icon.  When it opens, first click the "Analyze" button to see the status of your drive.  Usually you will be analyzing and defragmenting Drive C, but if you have other hard drives, you may wish to analyze and defragment them as well.

Look at the results of the analysis.  Notice that my drive is 21% defragmented.  Anything over 10% suggests that defragmenting is a good idea.  Also notice the Analysis Results, that I have 2,223 files that are fragmented, totallying 8.6 GB.  These files will require multiple reads instead of one, to open, and that will be slower than if they were defragmented.

There are two ways to defragment a disk:

  • Total defragmentation - the most complete type - Just click "Defrag".  This will probably require 2-5 hours, so start it before you go to bed.
  • File defragmentation - a quick and dirty type that is better than nothing, and is fast.  See the next page for this.

Total defragmentation is better when you have the time.  After Analyzing, just click "Defrag" and walk away.  It will complete automatically after a number of hours.

To defragment just files, click on the "File List" tab, checkmark the "Filename" box (which will select "All" the boxes), and then click "Analyze".  It will take a few moments to analyze all the files, be patient.

After the files have been analyzed, click the "Filename" box again, to select all the files, and then click the "Defrag Checked" button to defragment your files.  This will take from 5 to 20 minutes or so, depending on how many files are on your computer.

You can either pause or stop the defragmentation process at any time without any concerns.  This lets you stop it if you need the computer.  Whatever defragmenting has been done up to that point is saved, so if you restart the process, it will always take up where it left off, and continue the job.

When the defragmentation is complete, you can click "OK" and close DeFraggler.   Notice the large amount of "blue" squares.  These represent defragmented files.  There will always be a few stragglers which don't get defragmented.  This is not critical.  Notice in this example that the defragmentation is down to 7%, which is satisfactory.

For this example, I performed a "File Defragmentation".  A "Total Defragmentaion" would have resulted in the defragmentation to an even lower percentage.

DeFraggler - Drive Map Legend

You can click on "Help" in the upper menu bar, and select "Drive Map Legend" at any time.  You can leave it up while you are defragmenting, to have something to refer to.  It shows the meaning of the various colored squares.

To close the program, click on the red "X" in the upper right corner.  This completes the tutorial on the DeFraggler program.
