Attaching Photo to Email - Introduction

A favorite way of sharing photos is to email them to friends and family.  In an earlier tutorial, resizing photos that are too large to email was covered.  But once they are resized to a nice 800 x 600 or 600 x 800 size, then how are they attached to an email.

I have GMAIL as my email provider, so I will cover how I do it with GMail.  Your email program probably uses a very similar method.  I hope it helps.

Basic Email Layout

Here is a simple email, where I am planning to attach a photo. In this case, I have already written and addressed the email, so the next step is to attach the photo.

Click on "Attach a file"

Every email program has a way to attach a photo.  In this case it says "Attach a file", but a photo is just another sort of file, so that means photos too.  Notice the "Paper Clip".  For some reason, the picture of a paper clip has come to mean "Attachment".  I guess that is from the idea of paper clipping attachments to the main message.  In any case, you need to locate the "Attach" link in your specific email program.

Browse to Photo

Once you begin the attachment process, you will be directed to some sort of "Browse" process.  This allows you to browse your computer for your pictures.  Most people organize their pictures in folders under the main "My Pictures" folder, but whatever method you use for organizing your photos, you MUST be able to "find" the photo you want to attach in this browser.

Located My Photo

I have located the photo which I want to email, which was the photo I resized in an earlier tutorial.  Perfect, I have found it, and will select it and click "Open".

Click on the image for page view.

Photo is Now Attached

The photo is now attached.  Your email program will have some method or other to display to you that the photo is successfully attached.  GMail uses the method you see below.  I could also click the "Attach Another File" link and add as many more photos as I desire.  The only real limit is the upload limit imposed by your email program.  Many programs set the limit at about 2MB, which is fine for most pictures.

This concludes the tutorial on how to attach a photo to your email.

Here are the current attachment file limits by some of the popular email programs.  These limits have gradually become higher and higher.

  • Hotmail / MSN Mail - 10 MB
  • Comcast.net Mail - 8 MB
  • Yahoo Mail - 10 MB
  • GMail - 25 MB
  • AOL Mail - 16 MB
  • Juno Mail - 10 MB
